Selena
She broke down barriers within the music industry as a singer, performer and designer. She was a Mexican American singer who was both traditional and modern. She brought together both worlds and brought Tejano music to the forefront. The tragic loss of her life shattered her growing popularity and, like many times when a bright deeply genial star dies far too young has left many mourning all the untapped potential. In the following years, the fans became motivated to do their best to make sure that Selena's achievements would not be forgotten. The death of Selena triggered an emotional response within the Latino culture that can be likened with Elvis Presley, and John Lennon. Selena was a hugely well-known Latino singer throughout North America. Her music transcended boundaries and touched the hearts of both young people and older adults. Selena may have been hailed by some as a Latina Madonna, but she's still a fantastic example to follow. Selena's family values off stage and her participation in AIDS awareness programs provide a great example.
