Aaliyah gained international fame for her R&B vocals with the album. In 2000 she starred in the romantic action film Romeo Must Die alongside martial artist Jet-Li. Joel Silver, the film producer, saw her during a awards ceremony and offered the role. She was in 2002 when she appeared as involved in the Anne Rice-produced thriller Queen of the Damned.
